The Atlanta Regional Commission announced that the Regional Transport Plan 2020 is expected to be approved in February, a thirty-year investment plan for the city that provides for a total allocation of $172.6 billion. The funds will be targeted especially on transport projects, ranging from light rail lines to maintenance and construction of new roads. The objective is to cope with the city’s demographic boom. The population is expected to increase from the current 5.7 million inhabitants to 8.6 million by 2050. The other main goal is to support Atlanta's vocation as a national transport hub. According to data from the Atlanta Regional Commission, in 2018 the wealth produced by the freight and logistics sector reached $514.8 billion, which will grow to $1.2 trillion by 2050.
