Italy is part of four of the nine European TEN-T corridors (the continent’s planned high-speed rail network), and the country is investing heavily to expand its high-speed rail network, the fourth-largest in Europe with 1,467 kilometres out of the country’s total 16,781. Work is continuing on a Genoa-Milan link, which will ultimately connect Genoa with Rotterdam, Europe’s largest port. There is also an upgrading of Palermo-Catania, which will be Sicily’s first fast line. This European project aims to reduce travel times through a model of sustainable mobility. According to a study entitled "Rail 2050 Vision" by the European Rail Research Advisory Council, the European railway industry employs 2.3 million people and produces an added value of €143 billion euros (1.1% of European gross domestic product).
