Australia begins work on Snowy 2.0, a hydropower project that will help the country in its shift from coal and other fossil fuels to renewable resources for its energy production. Snowy 2.0 is a major expansion for the Snowy Mountains Hydro-electric Scheme, which is operated by Snowy Hydro, one of the country’s biggest energy companies. It will add 2,000 megawatts (MW) of generating capacity to the Scheme’s 4,100 megawatts (MW). Located in the Southern Alps, better known as the Snowy Mountains, Snowy 2.0 is a pumped storage scheme in which a power station recycles the water it uses to turn its turbines. The project, to be built by Italy’s Salini Impregilo and its Australian partner Clough, is confirmation of water’s primacy among the renewable resources used by the country to produce electricity.
