The United States faces imminent water risk: repairing the damage caused by lack of investment costs $2.6 billion each year. But the general lack of investment across the entire network, from water treatment plants to dams, from pipelines to sewers, could reduce gross domestic product by $4.1 trillion. The alarm was sounded by leading industry groups and think tanks during an annual event dedicated to the state of the country’s water infrastructure. It calls for an investment of $1 trillion to avoid the creaking system from collapsing, and avoiding further cost increases for consumers and businesses. The Brookings Institution calculates that water bills have risen by 48% since 2010.
