At 11:46 AM on August 14 one year ago, a section of the Morandi Bridge collapsed, causing the death of 43 people. A tragedy for Genoa and Italy, which had to deal with an emergency that also left 566 people temporarily homeless, as well as build a new bridge connecting the city to its surrounding area and to the rest of Europe. Construction of the new bridge began in April 2019, managed by a consortium called "PerGenova" which includes Salini Impregilo, Fincantieri and Italferr. The new bridge designed by starchitect Renzo Piano will be 1,067 metres (3,500 feet) long, with 19 pillars of reinforced concrete and 20 spans.
