From dams to aqueducts to power plants: the fires that are devastating Australia also threaten strategic infrastructures. Sydney, the capital of New South Wales, is one of the states most affected by the bushfires. Water infrastructures run the greatest risks, starting with the Warragamba Dam which supplies drinking water for 80% of Sydney’s 5 million people. The many plants and dams at risk have created a national emergency, prompting the government to allocate $1.4 billion (AUD2 billion), part of which will be destined to protect and repair infrastructures.
