Big cities need investments in water infrastructure. According to the American Water Works Association, just maintaining and expanding the US water network would cost over $ 1 trillion over the next 25 years. Cities like Tokyo are already responding with targeted investments and innovative projects. Newcomer Fracta Inc., a California startup, has patented a software that can identify the most vulnerable points in a city’s water network, helping water utilities know when and where to make repairs in time. This technology is already being used in 23 states and in cities San Francisco and Oakland, and allows targeted repairs and cost savings ranging from 30 to 40%. Like Fracta, many other startups are also working on improving the efficiency of water infrastructure maintenance. Water management is a worldwide problem today, linked to the demographic boom and climate change.
