The construction sector employs 21 million people in Europe and 1.3 million in Italy. The industry has finally recovered in the Old World, but still not enough. Thus, while turnover growth rates in Asia are above 3%, Europe is relying on a few major projects. Italy’s construction sector should get a boost from an industrial merger plan launched by Salini Impregilo, the country's leading construction group, and by Italian financial institutions. The plan, called Progetto Italia, could create 500,000 jobs over the next three years, saving some historic companies from bankruptcy.
