Repairs needed to put the Oroville Dam, the highest in the United States, completely back in action are nearly finished. After technical tests last April, more tests have been carried out in recent weeks on the dam’s overflow safety valve, or spillway. In 2017, weeks of intense rains caused the dam’s reservoir to overflow, sending heavy volumes into the spillway and damaging it. Authorities were forced to activate an emergency spillway – a risky solution led to the evacuation of nearly 200,000 people from their homes. Repairs commissioned by California’s Department of Water Resources have been completed so quickly that ENR (one of the most prestigious magazines in the sector) named Oroville as California’s best water infrastructure project in 2019. The Oroville Dam is now safe, but many other American dams are at risk. According to the American Society of Civil Engineers, an investment of $45 billion dollars is needed to make the riskiest ones safe.
