There are 530,000 different places -- from the United States to China, from Saudi Arabia to Australia -- where geographical conditions are ideal to build pumped-storage hydroelectricity plants that can produce and store clean energy using water. This world map was compiled by a team of researchers from the Australian National University, convinced that this energy production system is the most effective answer to the global demand for clean energy. According to the study, the energy storage capacity of these 530,000 sites – if fully exploited – would be equal to 22 million gigawatt-hours (GWh), several hundred times greater than what is required to support the entire global network of clean energy production.
