In 2018, 121 urban railway transport projects were completed worldwide. Of these, 75 subway lines were inaugurated in 39 cities. This number is slightly lower than 2017, but the overall amount of projects has grown over the last five years, showing the commitment of large cities to develop sustainable mobility alternatives to reduce pollution. This commitment, General Secretary of the International Association of Public Transport (UITP) Mohamen Mezghani, is demonstrated by two cities in particular. Paris and Riyadh are building two of the most important rail transport projects in the world: The Gran Paris Express in the French capital and the network of six metro lines in the Saudi capital.
