Istanbul, one of the world’s biggest urban agglomerations, is resorting to innovative technology to use water more efficiently. It has commissioned Fisia Italimpianti of the Salini Impregilo Group to modernise and expand one of its biggest plants to allow for the wastewater that it treats to get reused for cleaning streets and irrigating fields. It is one way for Istanbul to try to meet the water demands of a growing population in a country that faces the risk of water shortages. More projects of this kind are expected to be developed as the government aims to have 5% of recycled water used for farming, landscape irrigation and other purposes by 2023.
