Victoria state premier Daniel Andrews is proposing an ambitious project to link the suburbs surrounding Melbourne, the second largest city in Australia. Andrews announced the plan ahead of state elections. Coined the Suburban Rail Loop, it would be 90 kilometres long, have 12 stations and have the capacity to carry 400,000 passengers a day. The idea behind the project is to allow commuters to avoid having to go through the busy city centre to travel from one suburb to the other. It would also help take 200,000 cars off the road. The local press talks of a cost of AUD$50 billion.
