A cultural hub, a centre of innovation and a futuristic residential development. These are three different projects that share a common feature: flexibility. Their ability is to accommodate the needs of those who use them. Aquavero in Melbourne, The Shed in New York, the Tonsley Innovation District in Adelaide are cited by “Flexible Cities, the Future of Australian Infrastructure” (a report by The Economist Intelligence Unit for Salini Impregilo) as examples of how to respond to the changing needs of urban dwellers. As cities prepare to welcome the arrival of an expected 2.5 billion people by 2050, they are also looking to accommodate their changing needs. The goal – as reflected by these three projects - is to be flexible.
