The cities of the future will be flexible, sustainable, and equipped to continuously collect digital data in order to optimize urban mobility services. These cities will be capable of rapid change to respond to the shifts in the needs of their inhabitants. This is the main takeaway from the event organized at the University of Technology Sydney – UTS to present the study “Flexible Cities. The future of Australian infrastructure,” conducted by the Economist Intelligence Unit in collaboration with Salini Impregilo. Carlo Ratti, Director of the Senseable City Lab at prestigious MIT in Boston, spoke about the cities of the future. Ratti discussed the “Australian model” in an exclusive interview with “We Build Value”. Speaking about issues regarding the future of transportation, Ratti discussed which city development scenario is better – horizontal expansion, which would involve building on greenfield sites; or vertical expansion, which increases urban density. And he explained which technologies will change the future of cities forever.
