The tunnel-boring machines are at work to deliver Line 3: Mumbai’s first underground rail line. This $3.3-billion project involves digging a 33.5-kilometre long tunnel with 27 stations, of which 26 are being built underground. Mumbai is one of the most densely populated cities in the world, making this massive project particularly complex. To achieve its goal, the Mumbai Metro Rail Company Ltd -- a joint venture between the central government and the state of Maharashtra -- had to negotiate and sign agreements with thousands of families and businesses. The project is strongly supported by both the central and local governments. "Line 3 of the metro is going in the right direction,” said Devendra Fadnavis, Prime Minister of the state of Maharashtra on the website of the Mumbai Metro Rail Corp. “Our aim is to complete the project, highly needed to reduce traffic congestion in Mumbai, within the scheduled time frame. Metros help reduce carbon footprint as well as pollution. It’s the greenest mass rapid transit system” .
