Over 47,000 bridges are at risk out of a total of 616,087, and the repair bill to make them safe comes to $171 billion. The alarm was sounded recently by American Road & Transportation Builders Association (ARTBA) which, mapped the U.S. bridges most at risk based on figures from the Department of Transportation. They include icons like the Brooklyn Bridge in New York City, the Washington, D.C. Memorial Bridge, and the San Mateo-Hayward Bridge (the longest in California that crosses the San Francisco Bay). This is a national security issue because 178 million people cross these risky bridges every day.
