Argentina is making steady progress in cleaning up the Riachuelo River, one of the most polluted in the world near Buenos Aires. It is picking up garbage floating in its waters, salvaging boat wrecks from its bottom, fining polluters along its banks, closing abusive factories and relocating poor families to homes with decent sewage. Work on a treatment plant and an accompanying hydraulic tunnel is also visible. At more than two kilometres in length, the tunnel, being made by a consortium led by Salini Impregilo, is 15% complete. Once complete in 2021, it will flush water treated at the plant into the River Plate, where the Matanza-Riachuelo Basin empties.
