More cities are opting for fully automated metro lines as their safety and efficiency make them the best option to meet the transport needs of their growing populations. By 2028, the number of kilometres covered by these lines throughout the world is expected to nearly quadruple to more than 3,800, according to the International Association of Public Transport (UITP), an industry group. Most of the growth is to occur in Asia, in particular China where cities are expected to open 37 in the next five years. Meanwhile, lines have been opening in other parts of the world, including Sydney Metro North West, the first of its kind in Australia, whose bridge and viaduct were built by Salini Impregilo.
