By 2025, 50% of the energy produced in Australia will come from renewable sources, according to the Clean Energy Regulator, the government body overseeing the production of clean energy. Nearly all of Australia’s six states have undertaken a massive building and investment push in the past two years. Hydroelectric power is out in front, which in 2017 was responsible for 33.9% of the country’s clean energy production. This share is destined to increase thanks to two major projects: one in Tasmania, which aims to become the "battery" of the nation, and the other in New South Wales the pumped-hydro project Snowy 2.0 will be built. An investment of more than US$3 billion will expand the historic Snowy Mountains Hydro-electric Scheme by adding 2,000MW of generation and providing 350,000MW hours of large-scale energy storage.
