Italy ranks only 22nd out of Europe’s 28 countries in terms of transport infrastructure quality, according to a study by the European Commission, which points out that this poor performance has negative effects on the country’s economy. Italy’s rail transport networks are lacking, and the quality of its roads is also below average. Lastly, the logistical interchanges between port and rail vary widely between the country’s industrial north and less-developed south. Only 8% of ports are connected with a railroad for freight transport in the south, against 48% of those located in the north. The EU calls for more investment in infrastructure, particularly on the TEN-T network, a series of high-speed rail links, where Italy has reached only 41% of its planned targets.
