{"id":529210,"date":"2018-10-03T23:32:01","date_gmt":"2018-10-03T23:32:01","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.webuildvalue.com\/?p=529210"},"modified":"2020-10-25T11:08:13","modified_gmt":"2020-10-25T11:08:13","slug":"vancouver-billions-for-more-rail-commuters","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.webuildvalue.com\/en\/infrastructure\/vancouver-billions-for-more-rail-commuters.html","title":{"rendered":"Vancouver: Billions for More Rail Commuters"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"602\" height=\"343\" src=\"https:\/\/www.webuildvalue.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/vancouver-metropolitana.jpg\" alt=\"vancouver-metropolitana\" class=\"wp-image-523703\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.webuildvalue.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/vancouver-metropolitana.jpg 602w, https:\/\/www.webuildvalue.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/vancouver-metropolitana-300x171.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 602px) 100vw, 602px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>V<\/strong>ancouver is reaffirming its title as one of the most liveable cities in the world by investing billions of Canadian dollars on an ambitious plan to expand its public transport services and encourage more commuters to abandon their cars for trains, trams, buses and ferries.<br>The city on Canada\u2019s scenic west coast recently received pledges of more than&nbsp;<strong>CAD$3 billion<\/strong>&nbsp;from the federal and provincial governments for the most important part of this unprecedented expansion of its services: the&nbsp;<strong>extension&nbsp;<\/strong>of an elevated,&nbsp;<strong>light rail line&nbsp;<\/strong>and the&nbsp;<strong>construction&nbsp;<\/strong>of a&nbsp;<strong>light rail transit line.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Historic Investment<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Appearing at an event held in the city on Canada\u2019s scenic west coast in early September, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau reiterated his commitment to helping the British Columbian provincial government provide the funding for the expansion of the elevated Millennium Line and the construction of the&nbsp;<strong>Surrey-Newton-Guildford Line.<\/strong>&nbsp;\u00abOur government will continue to listen to communities, and make historic investments in the infrastructure they need, today and tomorrow\u00bb, he said.<br>Trudeau\u2019s pledge is the latest to be made under&nbsp;<strong>Investing in Canada<\/strong>, a plan in which the federal government will invest more than&nbsp;<strong>CAD$180 billion<\/strong>&nbsp;during 12 years&nbsp;<strong>in public transit projects, green infrastructure, social infrastructure, trade<\/strong>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<strong>transportation routes,&nbsp;<\/strong>and&nbsp;<strong>rural&nbsp;<\/strong>and&nbsp;<strong>northern communities.&nbsp;<\/strong>Of this amount, CAD$28.7 billion will support public transit projects.<br>British Columbia Premier John Horgan, who attended the event with Trudeau, said the network\u2019s expansion would meet the needs of a growing city of more than two million people. \u00abCutting traffic and getting people and goods moving faster will unlock economic growth while making our communities more affordable, accessible and clean\u00bb.<br><strong>Vancouver&nbsp;<\/strong>is a&nbsp;<strong>leading port for dry cargo&nbsp;<\/strong>on the Pacific Coast and one of the busiest in North America for foreign cargo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Vision for a Decade<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Officially known as the 10-year Vision for Metro Vancouver Transit and Transportation, the expansion plan is being carried out by the South Coast British Columbia Transportation Authority. More commonly known as&nbsp;<strong>Translink<\/strong>, it operates the network&nbsp;<strong>serving&nbsp;<\/strong>the<strong>&nbsp;23 cities<\/strong>&nbsp;that make up the metropolitan area. Having reached a record 407 million boardings last year, the network is among the busiest in North America.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1258\" height=\"1897\" src=\"https:\/\/www.webuildvalue.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/\/vancouver-billions-for-more-rail-commuters_02-679x1024.jpg\" alt=\"vancouver-billions-for-more-rail-commuters_02\" class=\"wp-image-523710\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.webuildvalue.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/vancouver-billions-for-more-rail-commuters_02-679x1024.jpg 679w, https:\/\/www.webuildvalue.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/vancouver-billions-for-more-rail-commuters_02-199x300.jpg 199w, https:\/\/www.webuildvalue.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/vancouver-billions-for-more-rail-commuters_02-768x1158.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.webuildvalue.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/vancouver-billions-for-more-rail-commuters_02.jpg 1258w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1258px) 100vw, 1258px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Launched in 2017, the 10-year expansion plan has so far received more than CAD$7 billion.<br>The<strong>&nbsp;Millennium Line&nbsp;<\/strong>is one of three so-called&nbsp;<strong>Skytrains&nbsp;<\/strong>that move along elevated tracks across the Vancouver metropolitan area. The&nbsp;<strong>planned extension<\/strong>&nbsp;will have it go&nbsp;<strong>along Broadway,<\/strong>&nbsp;a corridor that has the busiest bus route in North America with 56,000 boardings a day. It will begin at&nbsp;<strong>VCC\u2013Clark Station<\/strong>&nbsp;and end 5.7 kilometres and six stations later at&nbsp;<strong>Arbutus Street.&nbsp;<\/strong>Although the eastern part of the extension will be elevated, most of it will pass through a bored tunnel beneath Broadway.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It will be able to move&nbsp;<strong>7,500 passengers per hour per direction<\/strong>, representing a 32% and 96% increase, respectively, over the existing capacity.<br>At a total cost of&nbsp;<strong>CAD$2.83 billion<\/strong>, construction is to&nbsp;<strong>begin in 2020<\/strong>&nbsp;and be completed five years later.<br>Meanwhile, the Surrey-Newton-Guildford Line will be the&nbsp;<strong>first light rail system in the province<\/strong>, replacing a patchwork of buses that serves the area.<br>At an estimated cost of CAD$1.65 billion, it will have&nbsp;<strong>11 stations&nbsp;<\/strong>along&nbsp;<strong>10.5 kilometres<\/strong>&nbsp;of&nbsp;<strong>street-level track in Surrey<\/strong>, one of the cities in the metropolitan area.<br><strong>Translink&nbsp;<\/strong>recently drew international attention for having&nbsp;<strong>hired comedian Seth Rogen<\/strong>&nbsp;to lend his voice for public service announcements on its buses and trains. A native of Vancouver, Rogen is known for such Hollywood films as \u201cThe Green Hornet\u201d and \u201cThis is the End\u201d.<br>In one announcement posted on www.youtube.com, Rogen urges passengers to be on their best behaviour. \u00abThose are very nice sneakers but kind of a horror show on the sole. So get those feet off the seat. My Mom could be sitting there one day.
