{"id":529226,"date":"2018-06-27T23:42:42","date_gmt":"2018-06-27T23:42:42","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.webuildvalue.com\/?p=529226"},"modified":"2020-10-13T16:27:31","modified_gmt":"2020-10-13T16:27:31","slug":"sydney-gets-aud-3-billion-for-a-new-metro-rail-line","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.webuildvalue.com\/en\/infrastructure\/sydney-gets-aud-3-billion-for-a-new-metro-rail-line.html","title":{"rendered":"Sydney gets AUD$3 billion for a new metro rail line"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"602\" height=\"343\" src=\"https:\/\/www.webuildvalue.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/australia-sydney-metro-funding.jpg\" alt=\"australia-sydney-metro-funding\" class=\"wp-image-113590\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.webuildvalue.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/australia-sydney-metro-funding.jpg 602w, https:\/\/www.webuildvalue.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/australia-sydney-metro-funding-300x171.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 602px) 100vw, 602px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>A<\/strong>ustralia\u2019s most economically vibrant state,&nbsp;<strong>New South Wales<\/strong>&nbsp;(NSW), has announced plans to&nbsp;<strong>invest AUD$3 billion<\/strong>&nbsp;in a&nbsp;<strong>new light rail line for Sydney,<\/strong>&nbsp;the latest in a series of infrastructure projects designed to meet the needs of the city\u2019s burgeoning population.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The state government made the announcement on June 19 when its treasurer, Dominic Perrottet, presented the budget for 2018-2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The amount of funding that the government is giving to the project is part of a record&nbsp;<strong>AUD$87 billion<\/strong>&nbsp;that the budget has earmarked for infrastructure for the next four years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis Government is making this project a reality,\u201d Perrottet was quoted as saying in a statement released by Transport for NSW, which oversees the development of the state\u2019s transport projects.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The state\u2019s premier, Gladys Berejiklian, said the project, known as&nbsp;<strong>Sydney Metro West<\/strong>, showed how serious her government was<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>in planning for the city\u2019s future. \u201c(It will be) our city\u2019s next big underground metro railway\u2026 and we\u2019re getting on with the job as quickly as possible.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is also the first time that the government has committed money to the project since plans for its development were unveiled in 2016.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Sydney Metro West<\/strong>&nbsp;is the&nbsp;<strong>third<\/strong>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<strong>final part of Sydney Metro<\/strong>, the country\u2019s biggest public transport project that will&nbsp;<strong>connect<\/strong>&nbsp;the&nbsp;<strong>city centre<\/strong>&nbsp;with the&nbsp;<strong>surrounding suburbs<\/strong>. The other two parts of the Sydney Metro are Sydney Metro Northwest and Sydney Metro City &amp; Southwest.&nbsp;<strong>Salini Impregilo built<\/strong>&nbsp;a crucial&nbsp;<strong>section<\/strong>&nbsp;of&nbsp;<strong>Sydney Metro Northwest<\/strong>: a four-kilometre viaduct and a 270-metre, curved cable-stayed railway bridge, the biggest of its kind in the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Once all three parts are completed,&nbsp;<strong>Sydney Metro<\/strong>&nbsp;will have&nbsp;<strong>31 stations<\/strong>&nbsp;and more than&nbsp;<strong>66 kilometres&nbsp;<\/strong>of&nbsp;<strong>metro rail<\/strong>.&nbsp;It will have a target capacity of about&nbsp;<strong>40,000 passengers<\/strong>&nbsp;per hour compared with&nbsp;<strong>24,000 per line<\/strong>&nbsp;under the current suburban system. Sydney Metro will increase the capacity of train services entering the city centre from about 120 an hour to up to 200 beyond 2024 &#8211; an increase of up to 60%.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sydney Metro West will serve the key precincts of Greater Parramatta, Sydney Olympic Park, The Bays Precinct and downtown Sydney, known as the Central Business District, or CBD.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1258\" height=\"1556\" src=\"https:\/\/www.webuildvalue.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/\/australia-sydney-metro-funding-3-828x1024.jpg\" alt=\"australia-sydney-metro-funding-3\" class=\"wp-image-113620\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.webuildvalue.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/australia-sydney-metro-funding-3-828x1024.jpg 828w, https:\/\/www.webuildvalue.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/australia-sydney-metro-funding-3-243x300.jpg 243w, https:\/\/www.webuildvalue.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/australia-sydney-metro-funding-3-768x950.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.webuildvalue.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/australia-sydney-metro-funding-3.jpg 1258w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1258px) 100vw, 1258px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>A leading tabloid, The Daily Telegraph, welcomed the news, explaining how the new service would make it far more&nbsp;<strong>easier<\/strong>&nbsp;for&nbsp;<strong>residents<\/strong>&nbsp;in the&nbsp;<strong>nearby urban centre of Parramatta to travel to Sydney\u2019s CBD.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis once-in-a-century infrastructure investment will transform Sydney for generations to come,\u201d reads a government website dedicated to the project. \u201c(It will double)&nbsp;<strong>rail capacity<\/strong>&nbsp;between these two areas (Sydney and Parramatta), linking new communities to rail services and unlocking housing supply and employment growth between the two CBDs.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The state government intends construction of Sydney Metro West to start at the beginning of&nbsp;<strong>2020<\/strong>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<strong>finish<\/strong>&nbsp;in about&nbsp;<strong>five years<\/strong>, according to a recent report by The Daily Telegraph.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The state government website said more mass transit services was needed between Parramatta and the Sydney CBD because an extra 420,000 people were expected to move into the corridor between the two during the next 20 years. In addition, more than 300,000 new jobs were expected to be created by 2036 along the corridor, which includes the Olympic Park.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Sydney Metro West<\/strong>&nbsp;is strongly&nbsp;<strong>supported<\/strong>&nbsp;by&nbsp;<strong>residents<\/strong>. A poll published on June 6 by tabloid Sydney Morning Herald showed how 63% of respondents ranked it among their top three priorities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In presenting the budget, Perrottet said the bulk of the funds assigned to infrastructure would go to major road and public transport projects already under way, including WestConnex, NorthConnex. About 62% of them live in Sydney.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The population is growing rapidly. At&nbsp;<strong>106,100 people a year<\/strong>, it is the fastest in the country.&nbsp;<strong>Sydney<\/strong>&nbsp;also has one of the&nbsp;<strong>highest&nbsp;<\/strong><strong>population densities&nbsp;<\/strong>in the state, with 391 people per square kilometer, highlighting the need for more public transport and other services.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The state&nbsp;<strong>government<\/strong>&nbsp;has been able to&nbsp;<strong>invest<\/strong>&nbsp;such large sums of&nbsp;<strong>money<\/strong>&nbsp;in&nbsp;<strong>infrastructure<\/strong>&nbsp;because the economy had been exceptionally strong during the last few years, with the outlook for growth remaining above trend this year and the next two years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIn per person terms, New South Wales has been the fastest growing state economy over the past three years thanks to strength in household consumption, dwelling investment and public investment,\u201d read a state government statement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It said this \u201conce-in-a-generation\u201d infrastructure investment was helping drive the unemployment rate down to near record levels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe State\u2019s economic boom is forecast to continue, with the record infrastructure program contributing to a pick-up in business investment,\u201d it said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Australia\u2019s most economically vibrant state,&nbsp;New South Wales&nbsp;(NSW), has announced plans to&nbsp;invest AUD$3 billion&nbsp;in a&nbsp;new light rail line for Sydney,&nbsp;the latest in a series of infrastructure projects designed to meet the needs of the city\u2019s burgeoning population.
