Highways: 5 Critical Infrastructure Projects for Economic Growth and Global Mobility

From the Autostrada del Sole to the E40: roads and highways are vital infrastructure that improve connectivity, facilitate trade, and transform transportation into economic growth and sustainable development.

Roads and highways are more than mere transportation routes: they are lifelines connecting people, markets, and cultures, shaping territories and economies. Bridges that span rivers and mountains, tunnels cutting through mountain ranges, and strategic logistic corridors show how road infrastructure serves as a tool for economic growth and integration.

Designed to last and adapt to future challenges, these infrastructure projects not only facilitate connectivity but also stand as symbols of progress, ingenuity, and cohesion.

1 – Autostrada del Sole

The Autostrada del Sole (A1) is a prime example of how a road can become a nation’s vital artery. Stretching around 760 km, it links Milan to Naples via Bologna, Florence, and Rome, reducing travel times and improving connectivity between northern and southern Italy.

Inaugurated in 1964, the A1 is an icon of post-war Italian engineering, featuring numerous viaducts, overpasses, and tunnels along its route. With the contribution of Webuild, this critical infrastructure has played a central role in Italy’s social and economic growth, demonstrating how road infrastructure can unite territories, communities, and opportunities.

2 – Frejus Highway Tunnel

The Fréjus Tunnel is an almost 13 km highway tunnel connecting Italy and France beneath the Alps, becoming a key artery for transalpine traffic and European mobility.

Opened in 1980 and recently upgraded with a second bore, the project introduced separate traffic flows and advanced safety, ventilation, and fire protection systems. Delivered with the support of Webuild, the tunnel shows how road construction can overcome natural barriers, link economies, and strengthen connections between territories and communities across Europe.

3 – I-10 Corridor Express Lanes

The I‑10 Corridor Express Lanes project in California, delivered by Lane, the American subsidiary of Webuild, added approximately 11 miles of express lanes along one of the United States’ major highways, between the Los Angeles/San Bernardino County Line and the I‑15 interchange.

The I‑10 corridor is essential for local, commuter, and interstate traffic. The new express lanes reduce congestion, improve travel time reliability, and increase sustainability of transportation along one of southern California’s main arteries.

4 – Trans-Siberian Highway

The Trans-Siberian Highway is a network of federal roads crossing Russia from St. Petersburg to Vladivostok, covering over 11,000 km from coast to coast and linking the Baltic Sea to the Sea of Japan. It is one of the longest national highways in the world.

This strategic corridor connects remote regions and key cities across Siberia, serving as an essential artery for transporting people and for trade between Europe and Asia.

5 – European route E40

European route E40 is one of the longest international road arteries, stretching approximately 8,500 km from Calais, France, to Ridder in eastern Kazakhstan, crossing Belgium, Germany, Poland, Ukraine, and Russia along a single route.

The E40 is more than a connection between distant points: it links markets, cultures, and logistics systems across Europe and Asia, serving as a backbone for trade and passenger transport across the continent.
