From Semmering to Darjeeling Himalayan Railway: World’s Most Spectacular Routes

From high-speed rail to UNESCO World Heritage routes, five railway lines demonstrate how engineering can transform train travel into a unique experience: the Naples-Bari line and the Terzo Valico dei Giovi in Italy, Austria's Semmering Railway through the Alps, the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway, and the White Pass & Yukon Route Railway between Alaska and Canada.

Crossing mountains, spanning valleys and following the contours of coastlines and extreme landscapes, railways have always represented one of engineering’s most fascinating challenges, connecting distant regions while overcoming natural obstacles that can seem impossible to conquer.

Behind every spectacular railway line are bridges, tunnels, viaducts and technical solutions designed to adapt to the surrounding environment. From major railway infrastructure projects reshaping mobility across Europe to historic routes that have become World Heritage sites, these remarkable works show how travelling by train can be far more than simply getting from one place to another: it can be an experience where technology, landscape and human ingenuity come together.

1 – Naples-Bari High-Speed Railway Line

Crossing Italy from east to west, overcoming mountains and challenging terrain to create a new connection between the Tyrrhenian and Adriatic coasts: this is the challenge at the heart of the Naples-Bari High-Speed/High-Capacity railway, one of the strategic projects shaping the future of mobility in Italy, with the Webuild Group contributing to its construction.

The new infrastructure will run through the heart of southern Italy, bringing cities, inland areas and communities that are currently less connected to the high-speed rail network closer together.

With tunnels running beneath the Apennines, viaducts and new stations, the Naples-Bari High-Speed/High-Capacity railway project reflects a different approach to travel: not only faster, but also one that can unlock the potential of regions, landscapes and places far from the country’s main transport corridors.

2 – Terzo Valico dei Giovi

Between the Port of Genoa and the industrial heartland of northern Italy, one of Europe’s most ambitious railway projects is taking shape. The Terzo Valico dei Giovi-Genoa Junction, developed with the contribution of the Webuild Group, cuts through the Ligurian Apennines to create a faster connection between the Mediterranean and Europe’s major rail networks.

The main challenge of the Terzo Valico dei Giovi lies beneath the surface: most of the route runs through tunnels, including the main mountain tunnel that crosses the Apennines to connect Liguria and Piedmont. It is a railway project where engineering and the landscape come together, transforming a natural barrier into a new corridor for people and freight.

3 – Semmering Railway

When it opened in 1854, the Semmering Railway represented a seemingly impossible challenge: bringing the railway into the heart of the mountains while crossing one of the most difficult sections of the Austrian Alps.

Built between 1848 and 1854 along a 41-kilometre route, the Semmering Railway was one of the world’s first major mountain railways and a masterpiece of 19th-century engineering. Masonry bridges, viaducts and tunnels allowed the line to adapt to the terrain without dramatically altering the landscape, creating a new way of crossing the mountains.

The Semmering Railway is still in operation today and has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1998, recognised not only for its engineering significance but also for the way it transformed the relationship between infrastructure, nature and the surrounding landscape.

4 – Darjeeling Himalayan Railway

Along the foothills of the eastern Himalayas runs one of the most fascinating railways ever built. Opened in 1881, the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway connects New Jalpaiguri with Darjeeling, crossing a mountainous landscape of forests, tea plantations and sweeping views of the Himalayan peaks.

A narrow-gauge railway still known today as the “Toy Train”, it is a remarkable example of how railway engineering can adapt to a challenging yet spectacular environment.

In 1999, the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in recognition of its historical and technological significance, as an example of how a railway can transform the social and economic development of a mountainous region.

5 – White Pass & Yukon Route Railway

Between the mountains of Alaska and Yukon runs a railway born from one of North America’s greatest adventures. The White Pass & Yukon Route Railway was built in the late 19th century to connect the port of Skagway, Alaska, with the Yukon’s gold-mining territories during the Klondike Gold Rush, crossing an extreme environment of mountains, ice and harsh weather conditions.

Completed in 1900 in just 27 months, the White Pass & Yukon Route Railway represented one of the greatest engineering challenges of its time: a mountain railway capable of crossing the White Pass through steep gradients and virtually inaccessible terrain.

Built using pioneering techniques and limited resources, it is now recognised as an International Historic Civil Engineering Landmark by the American Society of Civil Engineers.
